Annotation: The article is devoted to the analysis of psychological characteristics, features of the motivational sphere and the interconnections between them among students of various professional orientations. What is used includes colour metaphor method, the Big Five Personality Test. Subjects include – 107 mathematicians and 55 athletes. The universal leading motive for self-determination, characteristic of youth, is identified. Gender and occupational differences in the hierarchy of motives and in the relationships between motives and personality characteristics are found. Young athletes, unlike mathematicians, are more practical. Female athletes are more extroverted than female mathematicians. Extroversion is associated with motives that involve active interaction with other people. Introversion involves targeting significant people. Motivation to avoid failure is characteristic of ones disciplined, not prone to showing affection, characteristic of passive subjects. Motivation to succeed with dedication and awareness of their responsibilities is characteristic of subjects with developed self-control, with emotional social connections, is related to the shaping influence of the family and the mother.
